Beyond ANOVA: Basics of Applied Statistics
Published in Hardcover by CRC Press (01 January, 1997)
Average review score:

Great introduction to applied statistics by a great teacherRupert Miller was the best instructor I had as a Stanford graduate student. This book came out of lecture notes that he produced for the required applied statistics course in the Statistics Department at Stanford. I took both quarters of that course. He was an excellent lecturer and writer. The book emphasizes practical aspects of the analysis of variance and deals with issues of robustness and modifications when the basic assumptions fail. It is set out in a very logical manner and deals with ANOVA and regression. It deals with transformations and is unique in its treatment of ratios. Discussion of departures from model assumptions is both useful and insightful. The book was published in 1986 prior to Miller's death and was updated by Brown posthumously in 1996. Brown worked closely with Miller on biostatistical applications at Stanford University. Other related books that Miller wrote or helped with included the Biostatistics Casebook, Survival Analysis (both published by Wiley) and Simultaneous Statistical Inference (published in its second edition by Springer-Verlag).

The Big Band Almanac
Published in Paperback by DaCapo Press (May, 1989)
Average review score:

A great guide to old-fashion swing music! The low-key, down home alternative to George Simon's often-lauded "Big Bands," this has a charming, almost DIY, quality to it. The graphic layout is pretty funky, but there are more and better photographs than in Simon's book. Also the writing is less jaded and more breathless, conveying the author's continued enthusiasm for his favorite artists of year gone by. Most significantly, Walker puts all the artists on an equal footing, listing them from A to Z, whereas Simon makes a big distinction between "major" artists, and lesser or non-swing musicians, shunting them to separate sections in the back of the book. Both books are informative, but I have more of a soft spot in my heart for this one -- I'd recommend it first!

Big Brown Bear
Published in Hardcover by Goldencraft (May, 1983)
Average review score:

An old classic, still a hit todayI loved this book as a child and now my young children love it too. The illustrations are fantastic... the kind of illustrations that remained implanted in the back of my mind for 30 years: it was a joy to see them again and I was surprised at how clearly I had remembered them. Your kids are going to love this book.
The story is simple. The Big Brown Bear is sent off to get supper and can not resist the honey bee hive his wife warned him against. Apparently this is a recurrent problem for Mr. Bear. The results are predictible and Mr. Bear returns home with supper (a large fish) and a very swollen (stung) nose. Mrs. Bear immediately realizes what has happend, applies a huge bandage and serves up the fish. None the less, Mr. Bear wishes he had some honey for dessert.

Big Magic Number Puzzles (Grades 2-6)

Average review score:

A Classroom Tool Appropriate for All LevelsThis book is exactly what you need if you are a teacher who has varying levels of math skill in a classroom. And who doesn't? The puzzles vary in complexity but will keep all learners actively engaged in seeking a solution. I've noticed that most students will start with the easier ones and then work their way through to the harder levels. Any school library should have this book.

The Big SneezeThe Big Sneeze by Ruth Brown is a wonderful book to illustrate verbs to children. I use it in my second grade classroom. Not only is there a great selection of verbs but the punctuation helps to teach children about inflections.

Bingo Brown's Guide to Romance
Published in Hardcover by Chivers North Amer (January, 1994)
Average review score:

A Suprise VisitI really like the book Bingo Brown's Guide to Romance. The book is about Bingo's love Melissa. Melissa lives in Bixiby, Oklahoma far away from Bingo. Bingo has decided to write a book called Bingo Brown's Guide to Romance which he has decided to dedicate to his baby brother, Jamie. Bingo writes in the book mostly every day but usually has nothing much to write about until one day, he sees Melissa at the grocery store. Amazed, Bingo's first questions are, why didn't she tell me she was coming? And, is that really Melissa? Because to Bingo she seems much bigger. When Bingo knows that it really is Melissa and he sees her, he doesn't know what to say. Why didn't she tell me she was coming, he always wonders. This book is so good that you won't want it to end, my friends that have read it say. I agree.
